About Bells Surf Wax®

Bells Surf Wax® is fully Australian owned and manufactured.

Bells Surf Wax® has been passionate about surf wax since 2013. Just like all professional sports people, surfers deserve access to the best quality products to give them the surf of a lifetime every time.

We have produced waxes for every water temperature, every water quality and every surfer. Our dedication to superior quality products has never wavered, 8 years of research and development and the use of only the best quality products available have meant our wax is the best surf wax you will ever use.

So what is Bells Surf Wax® made of?

Advanced Surf Technology®

Within our Advanced Surf Technology® wax formula we use the best quality products to ensure you have a brilliant surf every time.

Bells Surf Wax® is 100% biodegradable, it contains food grade paraffin and micro waxes, food grade softening agents ,inert mineral fillers, mineral whitener (commonly used in toothpaste and sunscreen), less than 1% of tackifying resin (key to our membrane technology) and a small amount of non-toxic, food grade scent”

Importantly there is absolutely NO petroleum jelly or plastic in our wax.  Petroleum jelly is a highly unstable product and separates from the rest of the waxes when exposed to temperature variations.

We have created an Advanced Surf Technology® membrane system that ensures silt and algae has virtually no build up in your wax, which normally causes it to become slippery, dirty and smudge on your board. Usually with other waxes you would need to use a wax comb to bring back the required traction in your wax. If applied correctly it will not smudge or get bare patches appearing on the deck. Just a quick fluff up of a little bit more wax between surfs is all you need.

Our wax is designed not to melt off your board even in the car or in your board bag on a hot summers day, the wax will soften obviously, but it will not bleed or run. This unique Advanced Surf Technology® membrane formula means that our wax is longer lasting, stays whiter longer and won’t leach oils into the ocean. Our wax will give you traction on your board up to 6 times longer than other wax brands.

Going Green

Is Bells Surf Wax® biodegradable?

“Yes the wax is 100% biodegradable.  Many people think that just because we use paraffin in our wax that it is not biodegradable. This is not true. Paraffin is as biodegradable as soybean.

We use FOOD GRADE and PHARMA GRADE products in our wax.  We have ensured that our wax and all of its individual elements are inert, non-reactive and safe. Our wax is designed specifically NOT to come off your surfboard unless you choose to remove it. Our wax has a unique membrane technology that prevents the elements in the wax from SEPERATING under extreme weather conditions, including going in and out of salt water, so if it is hot, you will not find our wax getting greasy and losing its tack.

These issues were very important for us to address when we formulated our products. We are highly aware of the current toxicity issues in the industry.  It seems everything a surfer needs to get out onto the water is full of some sort of toxic residue that can hurt the environment and the surfer. We have put huge amounts of money and effort into producing a wax that is NEUTRAL. It will not hurt the surfer and if by chance a small amount ends up in the ocean it will totally biodegrade thereby NOT harming the ocean.

We have also chosen to make our wax with the highest-grade products available in order to do the right thing by the environment and our riders. Bells Surf Wax® is more expensive to manufacture than other waxes because, quite simply, we buy the highest grade raw materials available.  Perhaps in this new age of environmental awareness, we all need to come to terms with the fact that if we spend more to support manufacturers who are trying to do the right thing, then maybe the cheaper, inferior, more toxic waxes out there will start to change their ethical view-points.”

Is Bells Surf Wax® non- toxic?

“Again, the answer to this is yes. Paraffin is actually approved for limited use as food additives by the FDA as well as cosmetic and medical applications. Paraffin wax is applied to the face, hands, feet and body during spa treatments where it is used to moisturize and soften the skin. Paraffin wax is a soft wax made from petroleum byproducts and has been laboratory tested to be hygienically safe to use. Pure paraffin, used in Froth wax, is colourless, tasteless and odourless, although scented versions are available. Paraffin is used in cooking, being a chemical preservative used on fruit, vegetables and candies to make them look shiny and retard moisture loss. Paraffin wax can be eaten, since is added to many types of chocolate. You can find eatable paraffin in stores, labeled as “baker’s wax” or “canning wax”.

There is a lot of talk about ‘organic’ and ‘green‘ waxes. Please don’t be misled. After years of research and testing, we have discovered discrepancies in the “organic wax” industry.

Sure, waxes occur naturally, but those waxes are generally not suited to surf wax application for a number of reasons, most notably their naturally low melting point.

Bees wax is too hard and needs softening agents, coconut oil melts very quickly and at low temperatures, soy wax is a GMO seed product, extremely petrochemical reliant in planting and harvesting and consumes a lot of water to produce on land that should be used for growing food and not to mention the chemicals needed to pull the wax from the bean. Anyone who says they use ‘organic non GMO’ soy beans for wax production is not entirely accurate.  Over 90% of soy beans are GMO, the less than 10% of genuine organic soy beans would be too valuable for human consumption as food to be blended up into wax. The reality is GMO soy beans are cheap for a reason..

We have been advised by a friend of ours, who is a Marine Biologist specialising in coral reefs, and who happens to be a dedicated lifelong surfer, that waxes containing soy are extremely harmful to the environment due to their propensity to release oestrogen into the ocean. Oestrogen is a potent disruptive hormone that is known to kill coral reefs. These are the same reefs we surfers NEED to give us the perfect waves we all seek.

We have created a surf wax that is technically superior in its application and that lasts longer, therefore reducing the amount you will need to use over a lifetime. In an industry that struggles to reduce its toxic footprint, we have done everything we can to produce a product that works, lasts longer and is non-toxic.

So we ask before you are misled into something that is not entirely true, do your research. We have done everything we can to ensure the products we use in manufacturing our surf wax are food grade quality and combined in such a way that they are inert and non-reactive in the environment, biodegradable and compostable.
